Creating a writer's mission winer

How to make a brand that feels on goals, purpose and value

When I was published for the first time, I remember how excited I was to see my name in print. Although it was in a small publication for a small story, I still felt like I was worth it. Shortly after the occurrence of this feeling, undoubtedly inserted.

was that the sign of better things? Wait - should I get a pen name? Does it say something about me as a writer, which I have published only Flash fiction? By publishing in the magazine X, this means that I'm just a genre writer? AGH !!

All of this stress thought me. Many writers send their work Willy-Nilly. They blow their work in the proverbial black submission holes. And who can accuse you? It's hard to choose the right magazines. You have to buy them to read them or pull them into the local library, and I hope they have them in stock. You have to make and simpize same and simme after literary gold.

emerging writers do not know where they will be in ten years. Everything you know is that you sit on five to ten half way decent stories or poems, and these pieces have to be out there - now! So you continue to work in the black hole. You always write things with heat, no matter in the genre, and then put it away until it finds the right place. They often do not take the time to think about what kind of writer they want. You save your work in a dark folder on your computer and never look at it again. You do not look at the big picture.

How can we fight this problem? A great way I found is to write a personal mission statement for your letter. Remember as a non-profit mission statement. It has goals - purposes - values. It is a brief and easy way to describe yourself as a writer. I'm not one to dove a writer, but to know where to make sure you're sure, it makes it easier to get there. So, here are my five best tips to create your own write picture.

1. Start with your goals. Here is a list of questions you can ask:

  • How many parts do I want to publish a year? (aim is a destination - maybe a year to start, then 2-3 while you get credits. Maybe more. Maybe you write a lot - I do not I know. Just put the number that properly feels.)
  • How many parts do I want to write a year? (note that this is different than to publish the number of parts. If you are not very productive, you want to set up this goal to give some motivation.)
  • What kind of work does I want to write? (genre? Nonfiction? Poetry? Everything? Do not you feel as if they did not limit themselves. Maybe the only determining factor for the "good quality" type is. Then your goal would be to make sure you are so Many parts as possible end - even if they are not so happy.)
  • Where do I want to send my work? What kind of places do I search for this fit "my style"? (make a list! What magazines do you love? Why do you love them? The same for presses, agents etc. Depending on your market, it could be quite long, but at least it's a start. If you make a goal What kind of places you need to find, you must be easier to find.)
  • What are my writing weaknesses? (edit. That's me. I know it's ironically because I'm a editor, but revision is my nemesis. Maybe your grammar or a clear story or comma. Write it up and make it up and make it up Target to fix it, or at least improve.)

2. Decide how to get there.

Do you have to refresh your vocabulary? Do you have to take a write workshop?Maybe you write a lot, but nobody reads your work. Consider to connect a critique group, or use the meeting to find a Writer group near you so that you can make other writers. Is there a writing conference that comes to the city where you could meet agents? Could you come outside and watch the human state more? Maybe you have bored and have to try something new. Find out your needs and decide how to hit them. Make a plan for the rest of the year:

January: Apply for writers conferences

March: sign up for a workshop

July: Write into a new genre or a format

November: Participation in Nanowrimo

3. Determine your audience.

Take a public profile. Who is your reader? What do you like? Are you in cats or dogs or hamsters? Eat Sushi at night at night with whiskey and your stories to read? Or are you the random poetry reader, who receives the occasional lit magazine? Do you want to flee or learn?

4. Synthesize your goals.

Grasp together in a parent. Write it down. Write it around. Make a date with your mission statement to update it every six months.

5. Keep it posted where you can see it.

Glue to your plans. If you have a friend or criticism group, keep them accountable. Share it on your website and your social media.
